Horses do not speak, but they are excellent communicators and by working with a horse we can see how we communicate with others effects their reactions.
How a client approaches a horse and witnessing the horse’s response can highlight boundary and emotional issues.
Likewise, a detached or passive approach can make it difficult to interact with a horse. I will guide the person to see the horse’s response in an objective way. They will then begin to recognise the ways in which their perceptions are accurate or misguided. They also discover the ways they may be projecting their own issues onto others.
Those who struggle to articulate how they’re feeling often find equine therapy useful as they’re able to express their emotions without feeling judged. When it comes to horses, people tend not to have the same preconceived ideas they have about humans.
Individuals who find it hard to trust others or be intimate with people can often achieve a strong bond and a level of closeness with the horse, and experience affection, acceptance, and mutual respect. They can be alone with the horse and facilitator, rather than a group session which can be intimidating.
